Apple Crumble Tarts – Sugar-free

These apple crumble tarts – sugar-free, are absolutely delicious. It depends what mood I’m in whether I make mini tarts or one big one. Usually, I like to eat the mini tarts cold, but when I make one big tart, I like to have a slice warm with some cream. I stick to cream to keep the carbohydrate content low, but it’s also good with ice-cream or custard. 😋

method

Step 1: Pre heat oven to 200C/180C fan, gas mark 6. First make the pastry by adding the flour and butter to a bowl. Using your fingertips rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, 2 tablespoons of water and the egg and mix until it forms a smooth dough. Roll into a ball, and put in the fridge.

Step 2: Now make the filling. Place the apples and sugar into a large saucepan, along with 2 tablespoons of water and cook on a medium heat. Stir gently for 5 mins. Cover with a lid and simmer for 5-10 minutes, without stirring until the apples begin to soften. Set aside to cool.

Step 3: Get the pastry dough out of the fridge. Lightly dust a clean work surface with flour, and roll out into a circle big enough to fit your flan tin. You want it to be around 3mm thick. Press into the base and sides of the tin. Trim what needs to be trimmed with a knife. Prick the base all over with a fork.

Step 4: Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and cook in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the beans and paper, then lower the oven temperature to 160C/140C fan, gas mark 3 and bake for a further 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Leave the oven on.

Step 5: Now we can make the crumble topping. Put the flour and butter into a bowl, and using your fingertips, rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Mix in the sugar and cinnamon.

Step 6: Take pastry case, pour apple filling mix into it. Spread out so that it’s level. Pour crumble topping on top of the apple filling, and again spread out so it’s level and covers the top of the filling.

Step 7: Bake in the oven, keeping it on the same temperature, for 20-25 minutes, until the crumble topping is golden.

Mini apple crumble tarts

To make mini apple crumble tarts, you can use the same recipe, and use a 12-hole tin. Bake on the same oven temperature (160C/140C fan) for 20-25 minutes.
