Honey has been used for thousands of years. It was especially popular in ancient Greece and Egypt. It was, and still is widely used for its healing properties. Not only does it make a great sweetener, it’s also used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial agent. Also, it’s used to heal wounds and burns, and commonly used to treat sore throats and coughs.
Let’s look at some of the benefits of honey.
1. Loaded with Antioxidants
Honey is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants are great at helping the body detox. They pull out toxins from the body. Antioxidants rid the body of free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been linked to many chronic health conditions including cancers.
Antioxidants can also lower your chances of stroke or heart conditions.
2. Antibacterial
The phytonutrients found in raw honey are antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial. This is why honey’s so good at boosting and strengthening our immune system. These properties also mean that honey can kill harmful bacteria and fungi.
3. Healing wounds
As honey is high in antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties , it can be used to help heal wounds. It’s also acidic which helps release oxygen from the wound to promote healing. Raw honey is commonly used to help heal wounds, burns and bacterial germs.
4. Relieves coughs and sore throats
Good quality honey can be used to sooth your throat. Whether you have a sore throat, or you’re preparing to sing your heart out. You can add honey to a cup of warm water, and drink. Why not add some ginger in there (also good for soothing the throat).
Honey has also been proven effective in tackling coughs. A lot of cough medicines are not suitable for children, so honey makes a great alternative.
Just take one teaspoon of honey. Avoid food and drinks for a while after. The honey needs to be able to coat the throat.

7. Nutrition
Raw honey is a natural sugar, and makes a great alternative to your processed sugars. The natural sugar content in raw honey has been proven to better for us than regular white refined sugar. Research even suggests that it can protect against diabetes and lower cholesterol levels.
Not only that, it’s full of nutrients. Some of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in raw honey include:

- Potassium
- Zinc
- Phosphorous
- Pantothenic acid
The less the honey is processed, the more nutrients it contains.
8. Lowers Blood Pressure
Studies linked with honey show that the antioxidants present cause a reduction in oxidative stress, which in turn lowers blood pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure you would benefit from introducing raw honey into your diet, and even using it as a sugar substitute. Try adding a spoon to your tea instead of your regular processed sugar.
Studies also show that raw honey can reduce cholesterol.
9. Hair and skin
Not only is honey beneficial for healing ailments in the body, it’s also really good for healing our hair and skin. Honey is an ingredient that’s added to many hair and skin products. Raw honey has a soothing effect on the gut and digestion, which can help treat diarrhea.
A study of 150 children that suffer with gastroenteritis found that those that were given the honey had a better recovery from diarrhea than those that didn’t. Those that had the honey had fewer bowel movements and recovered faster.
To treat diarrhea using honey, just take a teaspoon of raw honey, or mix in with a drink. Avoid too much honey, as too much sugar intake can make diarrhea worse.
